I found some old to do lists with some of my ideas for moving into cohousing. I was really looking forward to sharing the space in the common house. I thought it’d be a wonderful place to have a margarita machine, panini maker, salad mixer, cappuccino maker, pancake grill, etc. All the kitchen appliances that are fun to have but occupy space since you rarely use them. I did mention it and one family says they use their pancake grill every weekend. So, maybe some items would be public but those that need a cappuccino every day would have one in their house too. I did donate a few items like a coffee maker to the common house. Yet, before we went crazy and organized the house, COVID shut it down. There isn’t a common kitchen in my current condo though I have seen some in others so my fondue pot is in a cabinet and taken out for special occasions.
I also had the idea that the common house could have games for kids to play – online. That way my kids wouldn’t be plugged in all the time at my house and could maybe have human contact in the CH. Or, even better, play with the other neighborhood kids. Unfortunately, my kids didn’t really have kids their own age. I also saw that this can cause conflict in other communities. I guess the kids take over the building all the time, are too loud, or there is conflict over what type of games.
COVID hit and I lost my fight on the time spent online. It has been the only way my kids socialize, except for the few times they could be outside with others. The vaccine is slowly changing our world and once all my children are vaccinated, I am taking the computer and throwing it into the ocean.
